Valerie is a person who finds it difficult to throw away anything she perceives might be useful. From natural objects to used packing materials, she finds ways to use many of these in creating new objects. Throughout her lifetime she has familiarized herself with numerous crafts, from batik and stained glass and mosaics, to fabric sculpture, quilting, book-building, papier mache and other papercrafts, rubber stamping, and gourd crafting. Now she enjoys combining elements from these different crafts to create new ones. Stamping and decoupage can be used to decorate gourds, in addition to the traditional techniques of pyrography and painting. She particularly enjoys working with gourds, because each one has integrity and itself suggests how it might be used or decorated. Found materials are effective in creating miniature scenes in dried avocado shell halves, used as ornaments. Pieces of fabric cut into quilt pieces are a surprising way to decorate note cards. Card making is one of her favorite projects now, because each card becomes a mini work of art, able to be completed in a relatively short time, in comparison with other crafts. She especially enjoys creating a unique gift for a special occasion, either for relative or friend, or on commission.
