I started taking pottery classes in 1997 with the encouragement of my husband Bill. The moment my fingers touched the clay, I was held captive! I find while I am throwing clay I am in a magical world. I work with mainly porcelain and fire at Cone 6. I would say 70% of my work is functional. I use numerous glazes including an ash glaze. I also enjoy altering my work and making fun things like teapot fountains. The wonderful part about ceramics is the possibilities are endless! Time is my only constraint.
I enjoy painting flowers using underglazes. I then dipped the pieces in a clear glaze. I love flowers and that continues to influence my style of work.
I entered my Teapot Fountain in the Duke University Employee Show two years ago and won Best of Show and Award of Excellence. We have done numerous shows for several years; Clayworks Christmas and Spring Show, Sanford Pottery Festival, Duke University Showcase, Woodcroft Arts & Craft Show, Under the Oaks and Art Scope. I will be doing the Carolina Pottery Festival in Shelby, Clayworks Spring & Christmas Show and Duke University Showcase and Under the Oaks again this year.
I am a member of two Guilds, Triangle Potters and Clayworks. I took a class at Arrowmont Craft School taught by Lana Wilson, two courses with another potter of note, Brad Tucker. Numerous workshops held by Mark Hewitt, Ian Currie. I have attended the NC Pottery Conference in Ashboro for several years showcasing potters such as: Marie Woo, Randy Johnston, Pete Penelli, Ron Myers, Lisa Orr, Jim Robinson and more. I attended NCECA 2005 in Baltimore, MD this year. My pieces have been displayed at the NC Pottery Center in Seagrove with the Triangle Potters Guild and Clayworks Guild.
